As an introvert and an artist, I could dive into my work and stay away from business marketing and selling. I have sold my art in many venues and including gallery representation. But after working with galleries and selling my work via art shows, my natural progression to make more money from my creation is to open my gallery. My Experiences with Gallery Representation Self-representation became my choice after working with galleries for a few years. First of all, I don’t particularly appreciate poor business practices. Secondly, galleries do not share their clients with their artists. Although rightfully so that they owned their clientele, not knowing who purchased my work drove me crazy. Thirdly, having my business controlled by other people made me feel insecure, let alone giving 50% of my proceeds to them. This is What I Discovered about Self-Representation
Not being in control of my business growth was not for me. I wanted full reign to my art; I wanted to be the director of what I should focus on and know my clients well. Not to mention being in control of my business creates wealth faster. The reality of self-representation and being in charge of your earning potential depends on your confidence and know-how, and that means the more cash you want to make from your art, the savvier you should be as a marketer. Many artists, unfortunately, suffer from a lack of confidence in building an art business. The desire is there, but the fear is real, and it holds them back. I empathize with your paralysis because I have been there, but I have realized that most worries only happen in my head. If you are scared to take the leap of faith and dive into creating a life that you only dare to dream of, you are depriving yourself of an experience that expands your mind and confidence. It seems many years ago since my husband Paul and I built our first gallery. I remember I didn’t know how to create an extensive and cohesive sellable art collection in a short period, let alone to market, sell my art and cultivate collectors. Instead of enjoying my grand opening, I hid behind my front desk for security, frozen with doubts and fear. I Didn't Give Myself a Choice But since I leaped faith and had no jobs to fall back on, the only thing was to learn how to do it all well. I did, which led me to 13 years as a gallery owner, operating a business hands-on. How do I do it? Well, I solved every single problem as they showed up. But the whole process is taking the first step, letting it lead my way, and trusting it. You don’t need to know it all; you must take the first step. Sometimes your first step is to enroll in a program that helps you leap further faster. But if you don’t have the resource, you have to self-motivate and learn as you go. You can also join my art marketing group to help you stay on top of things. I don’t take anything lightly when it comes to my business. I know if we work hard and smart simultaneously, we will grow and prosper. Nothing is impossible if you want it bad enough. Take your first step and the easiest first step right now, is to join my group; members that have joined are far more productive because of accountability, support, and a positive mindset.
