Hey artist, The most crucial attribute to becoming a successful artist is not talent, it is self-discipline. Your success depends on it. To be a successful artist-entrepreneur is not easy because we have to be versed not only in our crafts but also in marketing and selling. Being pulled in so many directions is a difficult task. So in order to be accomplished, we need to set strategic goals to make everything work to our advantage, and that is where your discipline comes to play. Discipline helps you stay focused, giving you the tenacity to work through your challenges and reach your goal. The more you work on your self-improvement habits, the more your mind will expand and bring you to new heights. I have put together 5 discipline principles that will help you set goals and plan out your dream of becoming an artist-entrepreneur. My Story I have been a full-time artist for 20 years and for the past 13 years I operated my award-winning gallery. During that time, I have learned a lot about how an art business works. I know my long career wouldn't have been made possible without the following disciplinary formula.
Today, I am sharing my 5 disciplinary formula that works well for creative people like you. 1. Goal Setting Set measurable goals. This practice is a MUST. When you don't set goals in your career, your path to success will be arduous and confusing. Instead of riding a straight road to your projected plan, your lack of planning will cause derailment and failures. Having no plans will set you up to waste time and not get anything accomplished. When you have goals on how you want your business to take shape, you will learn to strategically break your goals down into manageable pieces that lead you to success. When you set goals, you have to see them through. And the best way to do this is by tracking your success along the way. Make them realistic, measurable, and timely. By being specific, every goal has to be planned out in great detail. With a target in mind, you can strategize the direction to get there and measure the success that it brings you. If your plan does not measure up to your goal, you'll know how to make it better by tweaking it. Don't be discouraged if, at first, you failed a few steps short; with more experience, eventually, you'll be an expert on executing goals. 2. Be Prolific Artists have discipline problems; the reason why is because creative people are free-spirited; we are spontaneous and inspired by so many things, which makes it doubly hard to focus on one thing at a time. But let me tell you an ugly truth: creativity will not bring you success. It is what you do with that creativity that will yield results. To be a successful artist is not as easy as most creative people think. You don't find success without consistent effort. And without the discipline to create that collection every year or do that marketing campaign, your career will be at a standstill. Aim to do 25 paintings a year and create a great marketing campaign to support it. 3. Marketing Being a successful artist also means that you have to be good at business. Just being creative is not going to cut it. Half to three-quarters of your time will be spent marketing and selling your art collection. So what you need to do is fall in love with the business part of your career. As an artist-entrepreneur, I enjoy doing business; it is diverse, ever-changing, inspiring, and creative. The more you learn how to monetize your talent, the more you will love it and success will naturally follow. I guarantee that because I am the living proof of an artist that has made it and only because I operate my career like a business. So artists, if you want to be successful at selling your art, start with being devoted to the marketing part. 4. Mindset The right mindset and attitude are hugely vital to your success as well. If you don't have a solid determination to make your art career work, you will fail. It really depends on how much you want to succeed and what you are willing to do to make it. Know your reasons why you want to own a successful art business. Ask yourself; Is it to get out of your uninspired job? Or is it to own a business and call your own shots? Or maybe you want to make extra income to support your family or plan that dream vacation? By knowing your why's, you will have more tenacity to accomplish your dreams at great lengths. Keep your eye on the end game. Write down your reason why becoming a successful artist is vital to your life and revise your list often. Train yourself to overwrite your fear and stay strong and determined. Get yourself accustomed to taking risks and overcoming doubts. It does take courage to see things through. 5. Follow through Revise your plan yearly and focus on goals that you can scale up and impact your business the most. Every 3 to 4 months, analyze your progress and process. After the year, look at each part of your business and see which one has the most profitability. Take your analysis, learn from it and expand your vision. Above all, remember to trust your intuition and enjoy your journey. If you need help in accomplishing your dream, come and join my free FB Group and let me motivate you to grow your art business.
