Here is the secret to why some art sells and some don't, art sells when people relate. By ‘relate,’ I mean when your work evokes an emotional response or connects with the viewer’s personal experience or interest. This could be through the subject matter, the style, or the artwork’s message.
With a track record of selling hundreds of original paintings and thousands of art prints and products, I can confidently say that art sales are not just about talent or formal education. The key lies in creating art that resonates with people, a skill I've honed over the years. Before I started my journey as an artist, I was still confused about the complexities of the art world. I made several unsuccessful attempts before I finally found my stride. I began painting as a way to cope with my emotional healing. However, as I started discussing my art with my clients, I realized the potential of my art to connect with them on a deeper level. And I also noticed that when people resonate with my work, I sell art. Through my journey of self-discovery and experience, I have gained valuable insights that I can share with you today.

If you are obsessed with creating art and turning it into a business, you must determine if it is good enough to share with the world.
But how would you have that knowledge if your dream is only in the incubation stage? And your self-doubt, uncertainties, and trepidations are killing your mojo! It doesn’t matter how many of your friends and family compliment your art; you most likely think they are just being nice. Perhaps giving your art exposure makes you feel vulnerable because you've spent many hours creating it and sharing something sacred and personal feels oddly uncomfortable. After all, you are afraid to look like a fool if it doesn’t sell, and your dream of owning a business will be crushed. I am a rare breed; I live in a bubble so that I can create original art.
Hey artist, I’ve been in the art industry for two decades, and my work has evolved many times over, not by style but by skills. As a self-taught artist, my skills were weak, but they improved as I nurtured them with practice. One thing about my art is that it is original, and my style is distinctive. I may be a rare breed because I deliberately refrain from looking at other artists’ work so that I create meaningful and personal work from my heart. I pride myself on being different, thinking outside the box, and being authentically ME. For over 23 years, I have sold my art in various ways, including art shows, gallery representation, co-op galleries, public venues, Airbnb, online sales, and owning my galleries. I know the art world well. I built my business by taking action and nurturing each baby step until I got it right.
As an art business coach, I am amazed by the questions I receive daily. That is when I realized that most artists began their journey, consuming diverse content around them, fantasizing about how they should sell their art with the many options offered and adopting many myths and misconceptions along the way. A light bulb went off the other day when I was researching for a program about YouTube ads. I found most course creators charging seriously inflated prices to the tune of a high-priced second-hand car! The lack of support and high prices excluded me from the program, and I was appalled!!
This led me to think about all of you and how you must feel when programs are priced out of your comfort zone and that was why I sent out the "Help Me to Help You Survey" a couple of weeks ago. As a community of artists, we are dedicated to creating and spreading joy through our art while prospering from our endless talent.
Let's celebrate the new year and the possibilities it brings. I hope you are as excited as I am about this fresh start, where everything is possible, and you can align your dreams with your soul. New Year is a special time to let go of failed plans or unfulfilled dreams and start anew. Release your shortcomings, identify the reasons for your failures, and learn from them. This will help you fine-tune your thoughts and pave the way for your future growth. Hi artist, Most of my life I have spent working as an artist. I started by painting on my kitchen table in a tiny 600-square-foot apartment. Although I only had a little material comfort then, my talent kept me happy.
One day, after I filled up my apartment with paintings, I gathered the courage to participate in a local art show. My first art show was moderately successful, which boosted my confidence to move forward. Hello artist, As the year ends, it's a good time to reflect on the past year and express gratitude.
I want to take this time to thank you for welcoming me into your inbox and for reading my newsletter. I especially am grateful for your emails and for sharing your journey with me. I do not take your time and attention for granted. Artist, no matter what stage you are at in your art path, keep envisioning your dreams, even when time gets challenging and your goal of becoming a successful artist seems impossible. The year-in-review workbook will help you clarify what worked and what didn't, giving you an idea of how to project your 2024. Once you finish the activity, you will know which word to pick for your Word of the Year. Moreover, if you complete the activity, you will get to the exciting part: choosing your Word of the Year, which will set you up for success throughout the year. Do you know more than 60% of new businesses fail within the first five years? There are so many factors why a business close its doors.
Operating an art business is no different; having a profitable enterprise is not impossible, but it takes discipline, the right mindset, good sales skills, relatable marketing skills, hard work, and sound art. I have operated mine for over 20 years. After side hustling with my art for less than two years, I decided to become a full-time artist in 2001; with a small saving for investment, I had to be very careful about how I operated my business. |
