Let’s talk about finding the right balance in our art business. I know artists are free-spirited creators that have the desire to make beautiful things and share them with the world. But if you want to make a business from your talent, you must learn how to operate a business successfully. I know none of you want to be part of the starving artist statistic, and the good news is you don’t have to be. For the past 20 years, my husband, Paul, and I have operated our creative business, and we have never been in the red. Our company has sheltered over three recessions and a few natural disasters, but we are still standing. I credit our longevity to our creativity, determination, and intuition. And I also know none of the success would have been possible without our acute sense of business operation and finance management.
Balance Perspective The achievement comes from having a balanced perspective in our business. As artists, we are naturally more right-brained, our strengths are in our creativity and intuition, but it doesn’t mean we can’t strengthen our counterpart, the more analytical left brain. To be an artist-entrepreneur, you need the Ying and Yang to create the right combination because having the parity will serve your business more effectively. Here is a small summary of what our right and left brain functionality are: Our right brain, the artistic side of our skull, is called the analog brain; it is more creative and less organized. Here are the attributions: intuitive, creative, imaginative, emotional, holistic, and dreamy. Our left brain, the analytical side of our skull, is sometimes called the digital brain. It is more orderly than the right brain and helps with: Logic, analysis, strategy, facts, mathematics, and verbal expression. Do you see the Ying and Yang of our great cranium? That is why having a well-balanced way of thinking helps with business operation. The beautiful thing about our brain is that it is trainable. If you flex the muscle of your analytical mind, you will find operating a business becomes more effortless and strategizing for success is not so difficult. Enhance your Left Brain You can enhance your analytical brain by doing Sudoku, accounting, and word puzzles. Writing and reading also help or taking a course to up-level your business skills; all of these activities exercise the left side of your brain. Enhance your Right Brain On the other hand, to exercise your right brain, make more art, meditate, play an instrument, and do more hobbies such as knitting, sewing, cooking, or gardening. Embrace Balance So, folks, I promise you if you learn to embrace the balance way of thinking instead of resisting it, it is worth the challenge and reward. I wouldn’t have had a successful business if I didn’t have a healthy outlook. You will learn the whole aspect of being an artist-entrepreneur is creative and ever-changing.
