My Experience as a Gallery Owner: I am front of the house in my gallery for 13 years. In my experience, I know art sells when the viewers understand and connect. Art is a luxury; it is an investment, so most people do not purchase original art without some careful consideration. They want to fall in love with it before they give you their cash. Therefore a few factors have to line up—for example, the image, skill, message, service, and price. Artist, if you got the talent and the image is priced right (note, I said Right, not Cheap), then the next step is to help your audience connect with the art and ask for the sale. You can broadcast your efforts via art venues, email marketing, blog, social media, and free or paid advertising. Manage Reputation and Make Long-lasting Connections Once you have them interested and purchasing, you must continue to nurture and cultivate them into collectors by marketing to their needs and fostering good relationships. The Authentic Way to Market is by Sharing. Don't be shy to discuss your craft and share your mission with your fans. You are not bothering them when you share and inform. You must know your work intrinsically well to sell your art. For example, what motivates and inspires you to create the art that you do? Your marketing is the time to shine and intrigue your ideal customers. You need to outshine your competitors by being uniquely distinctive in your art and messaging. Because what you do is interesting, like a good book, people want to read every word. Good art has the same delicious inquisition. Your viewers are intrigued by your image, but what else can you tell them about your art that would make them swoon and want your art in their homes? Could it be your technique, expressive brush strokes, subjects, or intuitive process? Selling is about communicating an idea and finding like-minded people that believe in the same thing to understand and want it. People purchase when their attention is piqued, and they make a connection. Marketing is no longer one-sided; Your audience needs engagement, and they crave authenticity in your brand, meaning you have to be original and genuine. Your art and vision have to speak to them. It's your job as an artist to explain why your art is the best choice for their homes. So, Artist, why is your art the perfect choice for someone's home?
