As we head into the new year, there is so much hope and wishes for the future. Perhaps you want to start a side hustle with your art and one of the many questions you may have is; if your art is good enough to make you the extra income. I know that is a daunting question. Every artist goes through the same questions when starting. Even the ones that have gone through many years of schooling feels vulnerable. So it is not just you; sharing your art does feel like you are standing naked on stage, exposing what is personal to the world. The thing is, artists; there is no easy way to determine if your art is good enough. You can stick your neck out there and see for yourself if your art will sell, or you can take preventive efforts to ensure you eliminate unwanted surprises that could devastate your confidence when you do go out there.
Here are some steps to ensure your art is ready to market.
If you don’t feel confident that your art is good enough to sell, you need to get your hands on some instructional art books or take some courses or workshops. Here are the differences between instructional art books, classes and workshops. Courses are well structured, giving you the fundamentals about a specific topic. You can get in-depth in classes learning a particular subject. Lessons are perfect for creatives that learn best in more instructional settings. Workshops are more loosely based; these classes are best for aspiring artists who have been creating for some time, have developed a style, and need some support to improve on skills. Instructional books are great; similar to taking art courses, you are learning specific techniques and skills, except you are doing it in solitude instead of a class environment therefore you won’t get personal attention as you would in a community environment. All three ways are helpful; It depends on which way you learn best. The first two methods are ideal if you need the camaraderie of other creatives and an instructor to ask questions. I prefer workshops because courses are theorized, which is different from how I like to learn. Being a self-taught artist, I like experimentation more. I learn best with freedom, so workshops are my thing because you can explore and work on your project, but the instructors are there to provide you with advice. When you join workshops or courses, you will see other artists’ work, and it will help you compare your work with others. Your instructors can give you ideas of what works and doesn’t and help you tweak your work. Some instructors critique everyone’s work when the class is over. Construction criticism is valuable because you are getting a professional’s opinion, so listen carefully and take notes to improve your work. Validations from friends and family Suppose you’ve got lots of praise from friends and family. And some of them are asking to buy your art or get it for free, which is a good indicator that your art is popular and they are sellable. If your friends and family don’t like your work, don’t despair. Find out why, if it is the question of genre preference or your skill is not up to par. If they don’t like your work because you paint realism and they enjoy abstract art, then they are not your audience. But if they don’t like it because the standard is amateur, go to the previous suggestions and improve your skills. Professional evaluation Asking an expert for feedback on your work is one of the best ways to fast-track your side hustle dream.
