Hi, Ting, If we haven't met yet, my name is Ting, I have been an artist for over 23 years and 13 years as a gallerist. Now, I coach artists on how to build a viable business with their talent. If your art is not consistently selling, it is due to having an incohesive collection. This also means your target audience is undefined and your messaging is incoherent. If you desire to be a professional artist, an extensive and cohesive collection should be your #1 goal. Here is my story. My Beginner Journey
When I first started selling my artwork, I believed I had to follow mainstream trends to be successful rather than my preferred genre of storytelling figurative art. During that period, I lived in the Caribbean and tried to create artworks I thought would sell in the market. I mainly painted historical pictures depicting the old life in the Caymans but I also made some coconut trees and beaches. I was determined to escape my soul-crushing job, so I took commissions from private clients and restaurants. I also showcased my work in art shows and sold it through local galleries and craft shops. Although I managed to sell some pieces, I was exhausted without a clear direction and my portfolio desperately required more cohesion. My Realization I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit, but I did not have the right formula to earn consistent income with my art, making it unsustainable. One day, I went to a new modern gallery and wondered why they had not approached me at art shows to become a gallery artist. Okay, I admit, I had ignorant confidence. :) At first, the gallery owner didn't seem interested in my portfolio. But when he saw my storytelling figurative art, he accepted me as a gallery artist and offered me a solo show contract. It was my unique collection with a distinctive style and mission that sealed the deal. I left the gallery feeling ecstatic! My Professional Journey Began During my solo show, I presented a series of eight acrylic paintings on canvas that measured 36" x 48" each. These paintings showcased my figurative work in bold colors and stylized compositions, and they became my first collection to sell out. This marked the beginning of my professional art career, and it was then that sales became consistent and my portfolio began to grow cohesively within my preferred genre. As a result, I moved away from painting coconut trees and historical images. My Aha Moment I began my art career with this realization - having a genre that you are genuinely passionate about is crucial for a professional artist. This discovery marked the start of my journey, and I understood how essential it is to figure out your passion and stick with it. So, Ting, If you want to learn more about building a solid portfolio that would make your customers eager to purchase or a gallery to accept you, check out my new training here. With Joy, Ting
