A Creator's Honeymoon Stage
Most artists enjoy making art because it quenches an innate need to be creative. The joy of inventing something beautiful fulfills their souls. At the beginning of their inspiring journey, they give away much work to their friends and family. Eventually, they improve their craft, and the idea of making their talent a business excites them because art seems to be the only thing that makes them feel alive. Simmering on the Back Burners But the dream of making their art into a viable business continues to sit on their back burners because they feel uncomfortable about charging money for their talent. So there is this internal battle on having the desires to do it but not having the knowledge to carry through.

Life as an artist is rewarding; I love having a creative business. I get to envision and design the life of my dream.
In case, we haven't met, my name is Ting, I am an artist and an art business coach. I have been painting and selling my art for over 20 years and for the past 13 years I operated my award winning art gallery. Why I Love My Creative Business: Aside from the creative benefits, I also get to operate a business with tremendous potential to scale up and diversify. As a creative entrepreneur, those two major points are music to my ears. When I started selling my art, I had an array of work with a variety of art genres.
I painted what I wanted; there was no plan in place. But one particular genre stands out from others, and it’s the one I have continued to build till today. I was living in the Caymans at that time, and my first few art showings sold well. But when it was time for me to look for gallery representation. The gallerist looked at my work, the easy-to-sell topics such as coconut trees and locally inspired art were good but nothing stood out until he came across my story-telling figurative series. Building a viable art business is a marathon not a sprint.
I want to let you know there is no such thing as an overnight success. Okay, maybe in some strange instance, something incredible goes viral, but that success most likely is a one-hit-wonder. Why? Because instant success does not have the infrastructure to sustain the momentum since achievement comes from hard work and lessons, only an experienced entrepreneur can obtain and maintain accomplishment. I have been in the art business for over two decades; I am still standing here and thriving because I have learned what it takes to be a successful artist.
And I hate to tell you this but operating an art business is not just about your talent, it encompasses so much more. I am not exceptional by any means; I am just persistent. I learned through many trials and errors; believe me; lessons are plenty when you do it full time in a gallery. To those of you that don't know me, I am Ting, an artist, and art business coach. For the past 13 years, I operated my award-winning gallery and built a sustainable business for my future. Life as a working artist is busy, to say the least. Since we are the makers and marketers, there is very little time left to waste focusing on the wrong things. So let’s discuss what makes some artists struggle and others succeed. |
