If you are obsessed with creating art and turning it into a business, you must determine if it is good enough to share with the world. But how would you have that knowledge if your dream is only in the incubation stage? And your self-doubt, uncertainties, and trepidations are killing your mojo! It doesn’t matter how many of your friends and family compliment your art; you most likely think they are just being nice. Perhaps giving your art exposure makes you feel vulnerable because you've spent many hours creating it and sharing something sacred and personal feels oddly uncomfortable. After all, you are afraid to look like a fool if it doesn’t sell, and your dream of owning a business will be crushed. Right now, your biggest fear is whether your art will sell. Is it GOOD ENOUGH? Is it marketable and sellable?
I know how you feel, artist but don't worry because there are ways to determine if your art is good enough. It's best to take some preventive measures to eliminate unwanted surprises and enter the game prepared. I have prepared 5 options on how to ensure your art is ready to be shared.
1. Upgrade your skills. If you know for sure your art is NOT good enough to sell, then let’s get a move on your art skills. There are a few inspiring ways to learn, and I use all of them, but my favorite one is the last; Practice. Here are your options:
Courses: are well structured, giving you the fundamentals about a specific topic. You can learn a particular subject in depth in classes. Lessons are perfect for creatives who learn best in more instructional settings. Workshops: are more loosely based; these classes are best for aspiring artists who have been creating, have developed a style, and need some support to improve their skills. Instructional books or videos: are convenient. Similar to taking art courses, you learn specific techniques and skills, except you do it in solitude instead of a class environment, so you won’t get personal attention as you would in a community environment. Practice: This one tops the list. Nothing is going to improve your art as much as practice. Paint like a warrior, experiment, and explore all the possibilities. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and when you do, don’t chuck them away, instead consider them your teachers. Treat them as an opportunity to learn and improve. Consistent practice is the best way to learn and build confidence. I’ve created a guide called “10 Steps to a Successful Painting" which explains point by point the fundamentals of a good painting. Whenever you encounter problems with your art, use the guide as a checklist. Click here to get your guide. 2. Professional Portfolio Audit. If you want to fast-track your side hustle dream, asking an expert for feedback on your work is one of the best ways. A professional evaluation of your craft is priceless in knowing which direction to take with your art. If you prefer to get a professional opinion, I can help you. My professional evaluation comes with a recorded video that gives you advice on what to improve, and expand, and which direction to take to turn your art into a thriving business. After the consultation, I will give you my professional opinion about your collection potential and how to make it more robust, cohesive, stronger, and marketable. Self-Audit: I enjoy doing self-audit because it teaches me to be intuitive and train my eyes to analyze the art fundamentals and in return become a better painter. There are two ways to do this: I called them Self-criticism or Self-comparison. Self-Criticism: Go download the 10 Steps To A Successful Painting guide I mentioned in section #1 and look through each of the fundamentals mentioned and see if your art has the design elements that makes a painting great. I highly recommend doing this practice because having faith in your own analysis is part of the artist package. Self-Comparison: The other way to do a self-critique is to compare your work with other artists who have similar work. Check out the difference in standards. If their art looks significantly better than yours, observe and find out why theirs is better, take notes, and learn ways to improve your work. Learn to better your work yourself or by taking classes, but remember, do not adopt anyone’s style; develop your own because originality sells. If you need help creating your style, read this blog and watch this video. 4. Form a Focus Group: If you receive many compliments from friends and family about your art, it’s a good sign. Some might even ask to buy or get it for free, which indicates that your art is popular and has the potential to sell. However, if your friends and family do not like your work, do not be discouraged. Try to find out why they don’t like it. Is it because of your art genre or because your skills needs revision? If they don’t prefer your work because of the genre preference, for example, they prefer abstract art, and you create realism, then they are not your target audience. However, if they don’t like it because the quality is amateurish, it’s best to follow the previous suggestions on #1 and improve your skills. If your audience does not like any aspects of your art, it is essential to investigate the reasons behind them proactively. You can ask them about specific design elements, how your art makes them feel, whether they find the colors appealing, or if they understand it. Consider using a focus group to understand better how you can improve your art. 5. Dive into an art show!: In-person art show holds so much power. Jumping headfirst into the exhibition takes courage; if you’re doing it, you’re my kind of person. There’s nothing quite like taking bold action and putting yourself in front of a live audience for real conversations. By having the first hand experience of selling your art is an effective way to learn and grow in business. Having the guts to take this step will propel your business to success quicker than any other method because live experience produces results. Conclusion Well, I hope this helps, let me know in the comment which one would you choose to ensure your art is ready for the market. Well, the fastest way to get there, is to get your art professionally evaluated, and next get some marketing knowledge under your belt. And here's how to snag my 35% off consultation promotion, offer ends April 9th, 2024, midnight PST. I want you to know that your fear protects you from taking action because it is easier to do nothing about your dreams. But life is too short to sit on the sidelines, my friend. Let's take some calculated risks. With Joy, Ting
