As a Type A personality, I enjoy getting things done. I love to create art and work on my course creation. If it is not because of my husband and my devotion to having a good marriage, I literally will be happy to be in my studio all day long. O.k, maybe I will pop up for food or a swim but hey, leave me in my creative dungeon, and I can easily survive. I know many of you creative artists out there can relate to this. But there are also times when I am uninspired, unmotivated, and overwhelmed. I know you had those moments when you feel compelled to create, but it is just not happening! Well, that is what we call an Artist Block. I detest Artist Block with a passion! Because as artists, everything we do is about energy, inspiration, beauty, and spontaneity. When we are uninspired and unmotivated, we can’t produce Quality Work, and it shows! Since our livelihood depends on our proficiency, we should look for ways to regain our motivation. The thing is an Artist Block happens because you are mentally and physically exhausted. Which means before returning to your studio, you have to fix a few things about your state of mind.
I will share with you my five ways to get you out of your artist slump. #1 Brain dump and Schedule. I know you are familiar with sleepless nights, counting sheep, and getting all wound up about life. I have had quite a few of those episodes and when you are tired, your creativity suffers. The activity that I am about to share with you has helped me tremendously, and I know it will do the same for you.
To stop being overwhelmed consistently, I suggest keeping a daily schedule. This habit will help you organize your life and keep things on track which will undoubtedly help with anxiety and stress. If you want to learn more about keeping a daily schedule, check out this blog. #2 Learn to Take Breaks and get into a Healthy Regiment. Here is the thing, when you have a surge of creative energy, and you feel like you are on top of the world, do not forget the big crash will follow because you have exhausted yourself. So the important thing is to avoid the big crash, learn to take breaks. Whenever you feel exhausted, indulge in fun things instead of work. Make your time-off fun, healthy, creative, and rejuvenating. Try adding a daily ritual where you exercise and meditate. Daily workout and meditation will make a tremendous difference in your overall health, and it will also keep you motivated and productive. My daily ritual is swimming, half an hour every day, it makes a huge difference to my overall health. Spending some time with loved ones also helps. It grounds you and reminds you of what is vital in life other than your personal goals. #3 Replenish your Inspirational Well. When you have an artist block, you must work through it. As artists, it is our livelihood to create consistently. And because of that, I have designed a guide for you called 22 Ways to Tap into Your Inspirational Well. It has a list of 22 fun ways to get you inspired and motivated again. Well, let's unlock your creative slump and get you going, because there is nothing worse than a wasted talent. And get rid of things that do not serve you well. Because when you say Yes to everything, you end up depleting your energy, and your mental health will suffer. Simplify your business system by discarding anything that doesn’t add value to your brand or income. For example: If you are adding bells and whistles to your website unnecessarily. Only do the things that matter, invest in time that will improve your business immediately or in the future. Keep things simple, and manageable. Once your business is doing well, you can hire an assistant to help you to grow but for now, simplicity and efficiency is the way to go. In your personal life, you also have to stop trying to please everyone, by juggling a hundred things a day. Ask for help from your family and learn to say NO to things when you simply don't have the time. If your mental and physical health breaks down, your family and loved ones will never have the best of you. So be kind to yourself because it will serve others. #5 Keep your Body Biological Clock. Keeping a consistent sleep schedule is not my strength. I am a night owl, and I find nighttime inspiring for creative work. So, I have a bad habit of staying up till 2 a.m., which messes up my sleep pattern and become counterproductive for the rest of my day. So I try hard to hit the bed at half past midnight. Listen artist, our body has a biological clock, we have to go to bed and wake up at a set time every day. Messing up our biological clocks will cause fatigue, anxiety, and depression. I have to sleep at least 6 hours a day or else I get emotionally unavailable or depressed. Conclusion There you have it, if you are feeling uninspired or you have an artist block, most likely you are overworked and need a better system to keep you motivated and things organized. Having an artist block is no funny matter, especially when you are trying to build an art business. I just want to share these strategies with you because I want to help you to overcome your overwhelm. Next time, when you are in a slump, give yourself some grace and get into solution mode, try some of these strategies. I am sure they will help you out immensely.
