Posting on social media is essential for today's business. Embrace social media as part of your art business strategy because it can be a helpful business tool if you know how to use it. If you plan to sell your art but haven't opened a business social media account yet, it is time to do so now. Most likely, your people are either hanging out on Instagram or Facebook. So what you need to do is open a business Page on one of those portals. Pick one and concentrate your time promoting your business and building your followers on your chosen platform. Be consistent in your posting and make them engaging, entertaining or educational.
How to pick one? Both Instagram and Facebook are equally as good. I chose FB because it has 2.9 billion monthly users. And since I don't have time to do both, I am keeping my focus on FB. Now you are probably thinking, "Then what?" Let's start posting consistently on your channel; 3 to 4 times a week will suffice. Know this; your social media channel is not a marketplace; most people don't think of Facebook or Instagram when they want to purchase something. Instead, use FB or Insta as a platform to talk about your work, introduce your art to new people, and attract new followers. Treat it as a gateway to your website, entice your new followers to sign up for your newsletters, and make them into your customers. Remember, Facebook and Instagram are Social Networks. People are there to socialize and browse Pages for entertainment value. Engagement is the key. Well, one of the vital things about social media is engagement. Facebook and Instagram want to see engagement from your audience via "sharing," "comments," and "likes." The more you can get your audience to engage with you, the more the algorithm will push your posts out to your followers. Here are 4 simple pointers on attracting engagement for your social media. #1) Keep it conversational and social. Don't just post a picture of your art and say absolutely nothing. Tell your audience what that particular art is about and tell your work's story. Find out what they think by posting a question. Let's say one of your art is about living a nomadic life. You can say, "this artwork is about my love of moving from one town to another." But instead of finishing the post with just that, ask a question like, "Hey, I would like to know if you are a settler or mover? Tell me below." See the difference? One is a statement, and one opens up conversations. #2) Show yourself once in a while. I know most of us are introverts. But you have to put away your shy tendencies in business. Sorry, artists, I hate to break it to you but showing your face once in a while so your followers know what you look like and who you are will build trust. Your photos don't have to be perfect; the more off the cuff, the better because they are relatable; all people want is to be able to connect. #3) Make it easy for them via multiple choice. Sometimes, it makes sense to give people options for answers when trying to get engagement. To simplify your follower's life, you can also ask your followers what they think of XYZ by giving them multiple choice answers. This way, they can quickly answer your question by just picking one of the choices provided. Ask questions like this, "Which one do you prefer? A, B, or C?” Make it conversational and easy so that your audience doesn't have to think too hard to give you an answer. #4) Share something fun and get participation. Since FB or Insta are social platforms, you have to share your life once in a while. Post something fun helps your audience to relate to you and get them to engage by asking for their participation. For example, you went to the beach for the weekend; post some fun photos of you and your hubby shell collecting and then ask your followers how were their weekend, and encourage them to share their pictures with you. I guarantee you will get more engagement with this post because people love to talk about themselves, and you just gave them something fun to share. Conclusion Easy enough right?
